Meherpur News, June 5, 2010: Under the slogan “A Biodiverse Planet is Our Dream,” World Environment Day was observed in Meherpur. However, due to the declaration of the day as a National Mourning Day, the scheduled rally was canceled. Instead, a discussion meeting and a special prayer session were held to pray for the souls of those who tragically died in a recent fire. A minute of silence was observed in their honor.
The event took place on the morning of Saturday, June 5, at Shamsuzzaha Park, jointly organized by the Meherpur District Administration and the Forest Department.
The Member of Parliament for Meherpur-1, Mr. Zainal Abedin, spoke as the chief guest.
The meeting was presided over by Meherpur Deputy Commissioner Mr. Benjamin Hembram.
Special guests included Superintendent of Police Mr. Iqbal Hossain and Additional Deputy Commissioner Mr. Abdur Rauf.
The meeting was conducted by NDC Sheikh Md. Aslam.
Representatives from NGOs such as Subah, Jiboner Jonno, Elahidad Foundation, along with teachers and students from various schools, participated in the event.
Before the discussion began, all attendees stood in silence for one minute to honor the victims of the fire in Old Dhaka and offered a special prayer for them.
Meanwhile, National Mourning was observed throughout Meherpur, with the national flag flown at half-mast and black flags raised. All other scheduled programs were canceled out of respect.
