A meeting was held between the Executive Director of Subah Samajik Unnayan Sangstha and the Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension, Meherpur, focusing on the potential and initiatives for cultivating alternative crops to tobacco.
During the discussion, both parties emphasized the negative impacts of tobacco farming on soil fertility, the environment, and farmers’ livelihoods. The Executive Director highlighted the need for collaborative action to support the Government’s goal of achieving a Tobacco-Free Bangladesh by 2040.
As part of the proposal, Subah Samajik Unnayan Sangstha suggested launching a pilot project on alternative crop cultivation with the technical assistance of the Department of Agricultural Extension. The initiative aims to engage local farmers and NGOs in a joint effort to promote sustainable farming practices.
Additionally, the Executive Director requested the agriculture department to ensure an adequate supply of fertilizers in Meherpur District according to farmers’ needs, to support the successful implementation of the project.
