Earth Day Observed in Chattogram: “Fossil Fuels Are Not the Future, Green Energy Is Our Destiny”

Subah Samajik Unnayan Sangstha observed Earth Day on Tuesday with a student rally, discussion, and awareness campaign held in front of the Chattogram Press Club. The event began from Shah Waliullah Institute and focused on this year’s Earth Day theme: “Our Planet, Our Power – Say No to Fossil Fuels, Embrace Renewable Energy.”

Every year on April 22, Earth Day is celebrated worldwide to raise awareness about environmental protection and sustainability. This year’s message emphasized the need to move away from fossil fuels and shift toward renewable energy sources to combat climate change and protect the planet for future generations.

Speakers at the event warned that the world is facing a critical tipping point due to rising global temperatures and environmental degradation. “Our dependence on fossil fuels must be reduced,” said one speaker, “and renewable energy must be embraced as the path forward for a safer, more sustainable future.”

More than 50 students from Shah Waliullah Institute participated in the event, holding handmade placards expressing their commitment to protecting the environment. The event aimed to instill environmental values in the younger generation and encourage collective responsibility toward sustainability.

Subah’s director, Dr. Monjurul Karim Biplob, presided over the program. Among the distinguished attendees were:

  • Abu Sufiyan, Project Director
  • Rehena Mahmud, Writer
  • Mahmud Murad, Environmental Activist
  • Afroza Hossain, Environmental Organizer
  • Siddiqur Rabbi, Wildlife Rights Advocate
  • Ritu Parvin, Environmental Worker

All speakers echoed the urgency of taking action to combat environmental threats and emphasized the need for inclusive, community-based efforts.

The rally and discussion concluded with a strong call to prioritize green energy over fossil fuels and to adopt environmentally responsible practices in everyday life.
